Yoon Visits Elderly Living Alone, Gifts Electric Blanket... Steps to Protect Vulnerable Groups
Cold Wave Preparedness Measures Operation Check
President Yoon Suk-yeol visited a multi-family house in Jungnang-gu, Seoul on the 21st to check on a solitary elderly resident and to inspect whether the cold wave protection measures for vulnerable groups were functioning properly on site, the presidential office reported.
On the 17th, President Yoon received a report on the heavy snow and cold wave situation and instructed Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong to "strengthen safety and care for vulnerable groups such as solitary elderly people in preparation for the cold wave."
The presidential office explained that President Yoon's visit was part of his on-site efforts to actively practice the love and consideration for neighbors that he has emphasized so far.
Since taking office, President Yoon and his wife Kim Keon-hee have visited solitary elderly people during Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays, as well as during extreme heat and cold seasons, delivering daily necessities and listening to their difficulties.
The octogenarian whom President Yoon met that day lost her husband 30 years ago and currently lives alone. Despite poor health, including back and knee pain from her past work in a restaurant, she receives support such as the basic pension and customized elderly care services.
President Yoon carefully checked on the elderly person's well-being during the cold winter, thoroughly inspecting the house to see if the heating was working well, if the water pipes were frozen, or if there were severe drafts. He also encouraged the efforts of the care worker who accompanied him on site and expressed the government's commitment to welfare for the vulnerable.
