Kim Kyung-ho, Gwangjin District Mayor's 'Decision'... Daily Collection of Household Waste Starting New Year
Improvement of Waste Collection System and Resolution of Resident Inconveniences Due to Different Collection Days by Building: From Collecting Three Days a Week (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri) to Six Days Waste Collection...
Kim Kyung-ho, the mayor of Gwangjin District, will undertake the challenging task of collecting household waste daily starting next year.
As a result, the alleys throughout Gwangjin District will become noticeably cleaner.
Gwangjin District announced on the 20th that it will implement a daily household waste collection system starting January 1, 2024.
The current system of collecting waste every other day, three times a week, will be changed to a daily collection system six days a week from the new year. This reflects the strong commitment to innovatively improve the waste collection system, a pledge of the 8th local government administration.
Under the previous system of collecting waste three times a week, the cleaning budget was about 9 billion KRW annually, but from next year, an additional 6.3 billion KRW will be added, increasing the total budget by approximately 15.3 billion KRW.
However, despite the economic difficulties and unfavorable conditions such as tax revenue next year, Mayor Kim Kyung-ho decided to boldly allocate the budget for the happiness and welfare of the residents.
A Gwangjin District official said, "Kim Kyung-ho, who passed the administrative examination and worked as a Seoul city official in charge of cleaning duties, has a deep understanding of the cleaning system," adding, "The implementation of the daily household waste collection system is an expression of the determination to keep the streets of Gwangjin District clean."
Previously, residents were confused because waste collection days varied by neighborhood, but now there is no need for that. All 15 neighborhoods can dispose of waste six days a week on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
However, Saturdays and legal holidays, when public processing facilities such as the Gangnam Resource Recovery Facility and the Metropolitan Landfill Site stop accepting waste, are excluded.
The waste collection system, which was previously divided between direct management and outsourcing, will also be unified. All household waste (general, food waste, and recyclables) will be collected by contracted companies.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho of Gwangjin District said, "We expect that the implementation of the daily collection system will solve the inconvenience of household waste disposal and maximize convenience for residents," adding, "We are working to process waste efficiently and stably, and we ask residents to cooperate in proper waste disposal."
