Held under the theme "Opening a New Horizon in Cancer Immunology Research," the workshop saw a large attendance of stakeholders from industry, academia, hospitals, research institutes, and government research cooperation networks.

Hosted by the Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital, the event was sponsored by institutions and companies within the Hwasun Vaccine Industrial Complex, including Hwasun County, the Advanced Precision Medical Industrialization Support Center, and the National Immunotherapy Innovation Center.

Since 2010, researchers engaged in the study and development of treatments for intractable diseases and vaccines have participated in this workshop to introduce the latest developments in biopharmaceutical research and share ideas. This year marked the 14th edition of the workshop.

Professor Kim Hyung-seok, Director of the Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital, said in his opening remarks, "HBMW is a festival connecting industry, academia, research, hospitals, and government in our region's bio-medical industry sector," adding, "It will be an academic forum where all members of the Hwasun Vaccine Industrial Complex gather in one place to engage in passionate discussions and exchange opinions."

Jung Yong-yeon, Director of Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital, stated, "Through this workshop, we hope our region will become the mecca of Korea's bio-medical industry and lay the groundwork for building a world-class super-regional biomedical cluster," and added, "Based on the open medical innovation center and the hospital's medical big data, which will be completed in 2024, we will actively support research that can create various business models."

Gu Bok-gyu, Mayor of Hwasun County, said, "HBMW has greatly contributed to the development of the cluster by facilitating networking among vaccine and bio-industry institutions within the Hwasun Vaccine Industrial Complex and strengthening researchers' capabilities," and added, "Our county will continue to support vaccine and bio-industry research and cooperation institutions so that their capabilities can be fully demonstrated."

In the special lecture titled "Opening a New Horizon in Cancer Immunology Research," chaired by Director Kim Hyung-seok, Professor Kim Chan-hyuk of KAIST, Professor Cho Jae-ho of Chonnam National University Medical School and the Immunotherapy Innovation Center, and Go Joon-su, CEO of AronTier Co., Ltd., served as presenters.

The second graduate session was chaired by Associate Director An Jae-sook, a hematology professor, and featured presentations by researchers Tien Duc Nguyen, Koemchhoy Khim, So Eun-ah, Jo Dan-bi, and Kim Young-joo from Chonnam National University Medical School, who had received the poster excellence award, sharing their research findings.

The Outstanding Researcher Award and lecture session was chaired by Professor Cho Sang-hee of the Oncology Department, with Professor Oh In-jae of the Respiratory Medicine Department, the recipient of the 2023 Best Outstanding Researcher Award, delivering the lecture.

Professor Oh, who served as the director of the Clinical Trial Center, was recognized for his efforts in translational research and molecular diagnostics development for lung cancer and his contributions to the development of the Hwasun BioMedical Cluster, earning him the award.

The final session included the presentation ceremony for the "Young Medical Scientist Research Academic Award," given to young researchers recognized for their creativity and excellence in academic activities in 2023, followed by presentations of their papers.

The awardees included Lee Sung-woo from the National Immunotherapy Innovation Center, Adityanaray Mohapatra from Chonnam National University Medical School, Kim Mi-hee from Hematology, Kim Young-jin from Neurosurgery, Lee Nu-ri from Cardiology, and Oh Hyung-hoon from Gastroenterology.
