International Flights Resume at Yangyang Airport After 7 Months... Manila Charter Flight Operates
38 Flights Including Nha Trang and Danang Until February Next Year
Korea Airports Corporation announced on the 18th that international flights at Yangyang Airport in Gangwon Province have resumed, starting with Philippine Airlines' charter flight to Manila. This comes about seven months after Fly Gangwon, which operated flights based at Yangyang Airport, suspended its international flights due to financial difficulties in May.
By February next year, Yangyang Airport plans to operate a total of 38 international flights to four cities, including Nha Trang and Da Nang in Vietnam (operated by VietJet). The corporation has been conducting relay consultations with six domestic airlines to attract flights to Yangyang Airport. It also attended the World Route Development Forum to attract major airlines from China, Japan, and other countries.
In preparation for the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, the corporation, together with Gangwon Province, has established a special flight incentive fund worth 100 million KRW to actively utilize the visa-free entry system for group passengers and attract charter flights to Mongolia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. They also supported travel product development through invitation tours for local travel agencies from China, Vietnam, and other countries.
By leveraging Gangwon Province's unique tourism resources such as winter sports and surfing, the corporation plans to actively attract inbound passengers (demand for entry into Korea from overseas) and promote the activation of international flights targeting the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z) who consume Korean culture. They also plan to open routes such as Yangyang-Cheongju and Yangyang-Gimpo for domestic passengers visiting Yangyang beaches during the summer season.
