Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do - Jeju-do, Agreement on Installation of Logistics Center at Nokdong New Port
Nokdong New Port Developed as a Maritime Logistics Hub Between Jeju and Mainland
Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 18th that it signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jeollanam-do and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province at the Seojaepil Room of Jeollanam-do Provincial Office to establish an inland logistics hub for Jeju products at Nokdong New Port.
At the signing ceremony, Goheung County Governor Gong Young-min, Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Governor Oh Young-hoon attended and agreed to closely cooperate on matters necessary for reflecting the establishment of a logistics center at Nokdong New Port in the national plan, securing cargo volume, and requesting national funding support.
Specifically, the agreement included ▲ changes to the basic plan of Nokdong New Port ▲ activation of the logistics center through stable cargo supply and cargo ship operations ▲ securing budget for the installation and operation of the logistics center ▲ improvement of transportation infrastructure for logistics. They plan to build a strategic cooperative relationship and actively prepare cooperation measures to revitalize Nokdong New Port.
Accordingly, the three institutions?Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province?will establish and operate a consultative body composed of working-level officials to discuss and finalize detailed matters. They plan to jointly propose the reflection of the port basic plan and other national plans as well as national funding support in 2025 as a local cooperation project among Goheung, Jeonnam, and Jeju.
Goheung-gun in Jeollanam-do has optimal conditions for Jeju logistics to be distributed to the national distribution market. Through Nokdong New Port, 170,000 vehicles and 270,000 passengers annually use the Nokdong New Port?Jeju route, and from Jeju, 940,000 tons of cargo are sent nationwide via Nokdong New Port.
Governor Gong Young-min of Goheung-gun said, “Nokdong New Port has the best conditions for cargo and passenger ships to travel to and from Jeju on time and at the lowest cost nationwide. Leveraging the geographical and historical connections between Goheung and Jeju, we will take the lead in enhancing the competitiveness of regional port logistics and strive to build transportation infrastructure such as highways and high-speed rail.” He added, “We will do our best together with Jeollanam-do to ensure there are no issues in developing the Nokdong New Port pier, its hinterland, and the logistics center as the forward base for Jeju logistics.”
Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok stated, “We will strive to develop Nokdong New Port as a logistics distribution hub between Jeju and the mainland and as a representative support port for the South Sea coastal marine tourism industry.” He added, “We will jointly work on changing the port basic plan and securing national funding for the Jeju-linked logistics center, and make efforts to have Nokdong New Port designated as a locally managed trade port.”
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon said, “This agreement signifies the collaboration between metropolitan and basic local governments to solve regional issues, and under the cooperation of Jeollanam-do and Goheung-gun, it marks the beginning of a new local cooperation model that can become a successful case in the local era.” He pledged, “We will faithfully implement the agreement and work hard to ensure the smooth progress of the plan to establish the Jeju-linked logistics center at Nokdong New Port.”
Since January this year, Goheung-gun has been promoting an exchange cooperation project with Jeju Province, signing an MOU between agricultural cooperatives of both regions, delivering 213 tons of Goheung rice to Jeju for the first time, and cooperating in the distribution of Jeju tangerines within Goheung area agricultural cooperatives.
