LG Electronics to Showcase Next-Generation Transparent Vehicle Antenna at CES 2024
Collaboration with Global Automotive Glass Company 'Saint-Gobain Sekurit'
Introducing Antennas to Replace Shark Fin
Developed Two Types for Attachment and Insertion
LG Electronics announced on the 18th that it will collaborate with the global automotive glass company Saint-Gobain Sekurit to introduce next-generation transparent antennas for vehicles.
LG Electronics has developed two modular antennas: an on-glass type for attachment and an in-glass type for insertion, designed to be applied to various glass and automotive designs. The company plans to unveil the new products to automotive OEM customers at CES 2024, held in Las Vegas, USA, starting January 9 next year.
The transparent antenna is a transparent film-type antenna applied to glass, gaining attention as a new communication technology solution in the automotive market transitioning to future mobility. Unlike the existing shark-fin antenna, it has the advantage of scalability, allowing attachment to multiple glass surfaces of the vehicle. The size can be adjusted according to the requirements of the OEM customers. This supports various communications such as 5G, satellite communication, and GPS, covering increased communication volume to provide seamless connectivity.
In developing the transparent antenna, LG Electronics has acquired over 80 patents, including design technologies that make the antenna pattern transparent and transparent electrode material technologies. Together with Saint-Gobain Sekurit, they established a process for applying the transparent antenna to glass, enhancing the product's completeness.
By entering the vehicle antenna market through the transparent antenna, LG Electronics plans to expand its automotive communication components business, including telematics. Based on its own estimates using data from market research firm Strategy Analytics, LG Electronics held the global market share No. 1 (23.8%) in the telematics market for automotive communication modules as of the third quarter of this year.
