EPD is a system that quantitatively displays and discloses the environmental impact throughout the entire lifecycle of products and services, from raw material extraction to production, distribution, use, and disposal. It serves as an indicator for consumers to choose environmentally friendly products.
At the "Norway EPD Certificate Award Ceremony" held at Hyundai Steel's Pangyo Office, Roger Martinsen, Minister-Counselor of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Korea, attended to present the certificate and discussed key industrial conditions and carbon neutrality realization between the two countries.
Recently, various sectors of the industry have been increasingly calculating and disclosing the environmental performance of their products, transparently revealing the environmental attributes of their products.
In line with this trend, Hyundai Steel has obtained EPDs for steel products in major markets such as the United States and Europe since 2019, and domestically, it has secured EPDs for a total of 16 products ranging from sheet products to construction materials, thereby providing diverse options for customers both at home and abroad.
Generally, wire rod products are produced through the blast furnace process, which melts iron ore, rather than the electric furnace process that primarily uses scrap, to ensure quality. However, Hyundai Steel has simultaneously achieved quality assurance and carbon reduction by mixing high-purity molten iron produced in the blast furnace with the electric furnace process to manufacture products. This EPD certification allows verification of these results.
Additionally, Hyundai Steel is currently developing a "low-carbon tire cord steel" that has transitioned from conventional blast furnace products to electric furnace products through technical collaboration with tire cord companies. It is also negotiating the supply of low-carbon wire rod products with global electronics companies, actively promoting development and order activities by leveraging the advantages of quality and low carbon emissions.

A Hyundai Steel official stated, "The demand for carbon information in steel products is expected to continue increasing in the carbon-neutral era. To respond to global environmental regulations such as the EU CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) and the US-Europe GSSA (Global Sustainable Steel Agreement), we plan to continuously expand the acquisition of global environmental certifications like EPD."
