HD Hyundai Heavy Industries secures 658.9 billion KRW order for ultra-large ethane carrier

View original imageHD Hyundai's intermediate shipholding company, HD Hyundai Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, has succeeded in securing an order for ultra-large ethane carriers.
HD Hyundai Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering announced on the 15th that it recently signed a construction contract with a shipping company based in Oceania for three ultra-large ethane carriers with a capacity of 98,000 cubic meters (㎥). The contract amount is approximately 500 million USD (about 658.9 billion KRW).
Ethane carriers are high value-added vessels that require advanced technology and construction expertise because they must transport ethane liquefied at a stable temperature of minus 94℃ inside the cargo tanks to the destination.
The ethane carriers ordered this time are 230 meters long, 36.5 meters wide, and 22.8 meters high, and will be built at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and delivered sequentially to the shipowner by the first half of 2027.
With this, HD Hyundai Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has secured contracts for a total of five ethane carriers within a month, following the order of two ethane carriers on the 16th of last month and an additional three carriers.
In particular, HD Hyundai Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is leading the market by securing orders for a total of 80 gas carriers this year alone, including 39 LNG carriers, 34 LPG and ammonia carriers, 2 liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, and 5 ethane carriers.

An official from HD Hyundai Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering said, “Due to the global increase in demand, inquiries for gas carrier construction continue,” adding, “Based on abundant construction experience and technological capabilities, we plan to also dominate the next-generation gas carrier market, such as ammonia and hydrogen carriers.”
