Yongsan-gu, Fully Prepared to Alleviate Cold Wave Life Inconveniences
Efforts to Alleviate Residents' Discomfort with Cold Wave Windbreakers, Heated Chairs, and Cold Wave Shelters
Cold Wave Windbreakers Reopened After 3 Years... 75 New Heated Chairs Installed
Comprehensive Cold Wave Measures to Continue Until March Next Year
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) is taking measures to operate facilities to minimize damage to residents caused by the winter cold wave.
On Sunday, following the end of winter rain on the 17th, the lowest temperature in Seoul is forecasted to be minus 11℃, aiming to alleviate residents' daily inconveniences.
The district plans to help residents escape the cold through ▲cold wave windbreakers ‘36.5℃, Yongsanpume’ ▲heated chairs ▲cold wave shelters.
The cold wave windbreaker ‘36.5℃, Yongsanpume’ is a wind protection facility installed at major bus stops in the area, allowing residents to avoid winter cold waves, strong winds, and heavy snow while waiting for buses.
Operation is set to resume after three years since it was suspended in March 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Installation will begin on the 15th and continue until March next year.
This time, the cold wave windbreaker ‘36.5℃, Yongsanpume’ will be installed at a total of 18 locations, adding 11 new sites to the existing 7. Installation sites were selected based on factors such as user numbers, sidewalk width, and demand surveys by neighborhood, including Hannam-daero, Cheongpa-ro, and Ichon-ro.
Additionally, 131 heated chairs that allow people to sit warmly and thaw the cold at bus stops will be operated. Among these, 75 were newly installed this year with support from Seoul City’s special grants and have been in full operation since the 13th.
The heated chairs operate when the outside temperature is below 15℃. The chair temperature is maintained between 36 and 38℃ and automatically shuts off power when it reaches 40℃.
In particular, the heated chairs can be efficiently managed through a remote control system that monitors normal operation status, operating temperature, running time, and power.
Cold wave shelters have been designated at 16 senior centers and one safety accommodation to prevent casualties among vulnerable groups.
The senior centers are open to anyone on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The New World Hotel (21-13 Hangang-daero 84-gil), designated as a safety accommodation, operates from 4 p.m. until noon the next day. Vulnerable residents affected by the cold wave can use this facility if they have obtained a confirmation certificate in advance through their local community center or the district office’s Elderly and Youth Division.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, stated, “There should be no inconvenience or damage to residents caused by the sudden drop in temperature,” adding, “We will thoroughly implement cold wave measures to ensure a warm and safe Yongsan during winter.”
