Busan City and 14 Regional Universities Sign Agreement on 'Busan Regional Innovation Platform University Education Innovation'
Business Agreement Signed Among 14 Universities at Pusan National University on the 15th at 11 AM

On the 15th at 11 a.m., Busan City will sign an agreement with 14 universities, including Pusan National University (the lead university for university education innovation under the RIS project), at the Faculty Meeting Room on the 6th floor of the main building of Pusan National University. The agreement is for 'Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project (RIS, Busan Regional Innovation Platform) University Education Innovation Participation and Cooperation.'
This agreement was prepared to pledge mutual cooperation among 14 regional universities in promoting related projects for talent development and university education innovation, following their selection in this year's Ministry of Education's call for proposals for the 'Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project (RIS)'.
The 14 universities are Pusan National University, Korea Maritime and Ocean University, Dong-A University, Gyeongnam Information University, Kyungsung University, Pukyong National University, Tongmyong University, Dongseo University, Dong-Eui Institute of Technology, Dong-Eui University, Catholic University of Pusan, Busan Gyeongsang University, Busan University of Foreign Studies, and Silla University.
About 20 people, including Lee Seong-gwon, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs, presidents of the 14 universities, the head of the Busan Regional Innovation Platform General Operation Center, and platform officials, will attend the signing ceremony.
Once this agreement is signed, the 14 regional universities will mutually cooperate in promoting university education innovation tasks and the smooth operation of the BITS (Busan Institute of Technology and Science) shared university for nurturing specialized talent in three core fields.
Specifically, each party plans to actively cooperate in university education innovation and shared university operation by ▲promoting the establishment and revision of academic regulations for operating the BITS shared university ▲restructuring academic systems and credit exchange among participating universities ▲opening and sharing curricula among universities and activating faculty and student exchanges ▲participating in the establishment and operation of the BITS shared university ▲improving educational and research environments and promoting the purchase and operation of equipment.
Busan City and Busan Technopark (the RIS project general operation center) will also support the smooth progress of the project.
Additionally, the city plans to discuss major policies with the 14 regional universities and Busan Regional Innovation Platform officials attending the signing ceremony, sharing opinions for mutual development and innovation so that regional universities can play a central role in regional innovation.
Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Lee Seong-gwon stated, “We will continue to actively cooperate to establish a regional talent development system based on a partnership with regional universities so that the BITS shared university and Busan Regional Innovation Platform can serve as a focal point for nurturing local talent and supporting employment and entrepreneurship in our region.”
The Busan Regional Innovation Platform (RIS) was finally selected in March after a government (Ministry of Education) competition in February. Over the next five years, a total of 214.3 billion KRW will be invested, including 149.9 billion KRW in national funds and 64.4 billion KRW in local funds.
Based on cooperation among local governments, universities, and regional innovation institutions, it aims to directly nurture the talent needed for the development of regional key industries and solving local issues, supporting their settlement in the region through employment and entrepreneurship. The city is promoting the establishment of the BITS shared university and innovation projects in three core fields.
The three core fields are smart port logistics, eco-friendly smart ships, and clean energy convergence parts and materials.
The BITS shared university is part of the Ministry of Education’s Local Government-University Cooperation-Based Regional Innovation Project (RIS), led by Pusan National University as the lead university for university education innovation, with participation from 14 regional universities.

Through establishing new interdisciplinary majors at the shared university, opening and operating joint curricula, sharing educational infrastructure, and completing interdisciplinary major degrees, it aims to jointly nurture specialized talent in the fields of ▲smart port logistics ▲eco-friendly smart ships ▲clean energy convergence parts and materials. It is expected to contribute to regional innovation through the creation of a marine-specialized regional industry-academia cooperation innovation city and linkage and cooperation between universities and regional industries.
