Pope Designates Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Not Vatican, as Posthumous Burial Site
Pope Francis revealed in an interview with news channel N+ on the 13th (local time) that he has designated the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy, rather than the Vatican, as his burial site after death.
According to the interview, the Pope stated, "I have significantly simplified the papal funeral procedures," and added, "I have already prepared my tomb at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in (Rome)." The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is considered one of the four major basilicas in Rome.
The Pope can directly designate his burial site after death. Among the 265 previous popes, 148 were interred in St. Peter's Basilica located in the Vatican. Excluding those who were relocated, a total of 91 popes are currently buried in the underground tombs of St. Peter's Basilica.
