Gyeongnam National University Far East Issue Research Institute Holds the 72nd Unification Strategy Forum
On the Theme of '2023 Hanbando Situation Assessment and 2024 Outlook'
The Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Gyeongnam National University held the "72nd Unification Strategy Forum" (webinar) on the 13th.
Under the theme of "Assessment of the 2023 Korean Peninsula Situation and Outlook for 2024," this Unification Strategy Forum was divided into three detailed topics and three sessions: ▲South Korea-U.S.-Japan ▲North Korea-China-Russia ▲Inter-Korean relations.
In the first session, Professor Jeon Bong-geun, Honorary Professor at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, gave a presentation titled "Action and Reaction of the Changing South Korea-U.S.-Japan Cooperation Structure." Professors Ma Sang-yoon from Catholic University (U.S. perspective), Cho Jin-gu, Director of the Japan Center at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Gyeongnam National University (Japan perspective), and Sung Ki-young, Senior Research Fellow at the National Security Strategy Institute (South Korea perspective) each participated in the discussion.
In the second session, Kim Heung-kyu, Director of the U.S.-China Policy Research Institute at Ajou University, presented on "The Current Status, Drivers, and Outlook of North Korea-China-Russia Closeness." Lee Sang-man, Director of the China Center at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Gyeongnam National University (China perspective), Park No-byeok, former Ambassador to Russia (Russia perspective), and Lee Cheol, Senior Research Fellow at the Peace Foundation (North Korea perspective) each took part in the discussion.
In the third session, Professor Jung Young-chul of Sogang University presented on "The Korean Peninsula in a Rapidly Changing World Order: Changes in North Korea’s Situation and Prospects for Inter-Korean Relations." Professors Koo Gap-woo of the University of North Korean Studies, Choi Yong-hwan, Senior Research Fellow at the National Security Strategy Institute, and Lim Eul-chul, Director of the ICNK Center at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Gyeongnam National University, each participated in the discussion.

Lee Kwan-se, Director of the Unification Strategy Forum, which hosted the event, said, "It was an opportunity to comprehensively evaluate and analyze the 2023 Korean Peninsula situation and the outlook for 2024," and assessed that "it was a meaningful occasion to establish the direction of our government’s unification and North Korea policies for 2024."
