Korean companies such as Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motor, and Lotte, along with American companies including Google, IBM, Applied Materials, and Amazon Web Services, met with the highest-level national security officials from both countries' presidential offices to agree on close cooperation in advanced technology sectors directly linked to national security.
The Korea Economic Organization Association announced that on the 8th, it held the "Korea-U.S. Next-Generation Core and Emerging Technology Cooperation Public-Private Forum" at the FKI Tower Conference Center in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, together with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This public-private joint forum aims to fully activate cooperation in core and emerging technology sectors, which both countries pledged to actively promote at the Korea-U.S. summit in April.
National Security Office Director Cho Tae-yong and U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, heads of the national security councils of both countries, attended the forum. About 30 companies participated, including Korean firms such as Samsung, Hyundai Motor, SK, and Lotte, as well as American companies like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Google, IBM, Applied Materials, and Amazon Web Services.
The forum focused on strengthening cooperation in core and emerging technology fields such as semiconductors, batteries, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, and biotechnology, as well as securing economic security.
Ryu Jin, chairman of the Korea Economic Organization Association, said in his opening remarks, "It is very encouraging to highlight the importance of advanced technology from a national security perspective and elevate the economic and technological partnership between the two countries as a core pillar of the Korea-U.S. alliance." He added, "Based on the fact that the two countries are each other's top-value allies, close cooperation between companies and governments can strengthen competitiveness in core and emerging technologies and secure economic security."
Chairman Ryu also stated, "The Korea-U.S. business communities will accelerate mutual investment expansion in advanced fields and the establishment of technology standards," and urged, "The government should also minimize obstacles such as trade and regulatory barriers."
