Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters "December, the Month with the Most Fire Incidents in the Year"
It has been found that fires caused by negligence frequently occur in office facilities or construction sites in December each year.
The Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters announced on the 7th that, according to an analysis of fires, disasters, and safety accidents that occurred from 2018 to 2022, there were 2,492 fires in December, accounting for 9.0% of the total number of fires (27,684 cases).
The casualties from fires in December totaled 161 people, including 23 deaths. By cause, fires due to negligence accounted for 1,372 cases, representing 55.1% of all fires in December. Detailed types of negligence included leaving combustible materials nearby (144 cases), negligence in installation or use of electrical equipment (77 cases), and welding, cutting, or grinding activities (62 cases).
By location, fires in office facilities (196 cases) increased by 40 cases (25.6%) compared to the previous month (156 cases). Additionally, fires at construction sites with a total floor area of 2,000㎡ or more (81 cases) rose by 37 cases (84.1%) compared to the previous month (44 cases).
Furthermore, over the past five years, the total number of 119 emergency dispatches related to safety accidents in December was 65,486. In particular, traffic accident safety measures (2,638 cases) increased by 52 cases (2.0%) compared to the previous month. The number of traffic accident safety measures had been decreasing since August but showed an increasing trend again from November.
Moreover, according to recent five-year statistics from the Korea Elevator Safety Agency, elevator safety accidents (1,377 cases) also occurred most frequently in December throughout the year.
