Through 'Power System Innovation,' Transmission Line Construction Period Reduced from 13 to 9.3 Years
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has decided to shorten the construction period of transmission lines by 30% to support the increasing electricity demand and the expansion of carbon-free power supply such as nuclear power and renewable energy.
On the 4th, the Ministry held the 30th Energy Committee meeting chaired by Minister Bang Beom-gyu to discuss the 'Power Grid Innovation Measures' and 'Current Status and Direction of Renewable Energy Policy' with related ministries and energy experts.
The Power Grid Innovation Measures include reducing the average construction period of transmission lines, which can be considered the arteries of electricity, from 13 years (based on 345kV) to 9.3 years, a 30% reduction. It also plans to double the share of flexible power sources capable of output control, such as energy storage systems (ESS), to 62% by 2036, while reducing the scale of transmission line construction by 10% compared to existing plans.
In his opening remarks, Minister Bang emphasized, "We will promote the enactment of a special law to strengthen special cases such as permits and compensation to timely construct key national power grids like the East Coast-Sudogwon transmission line and the West Coast transmission line." He added, "To orderly utilize the limited power grid, we will adjust the speed of power generation permits considering grid saturation and provide incentives for power sources that offer flexibility, such as ESS, to ensure stable power supply from various carbon-free sources."

He continued, "So far, various problems such as high costs, grid operation burdens, and poor project management have accumulated due to the quantitative expansion of renewable energy supply, and we are normalizing these issues." He concluded, "We will continue institutional innovations for market normalization and expand renewable energy through cost-effective and orderly supply policies."
