Over 300 ASEAN Intellectual Property Public and Private Experts Gathered
The Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) announced on the 23rd that at the recent 'Korea-ASEAN Intellectual Property Cooperation Conference' held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, intellectual property experts from Korea and the 10 ASEAN countries gathered in one place for in-depth discussions. At the event, KOMCA led the 'Content and Music Copyright Protection' session presentation and discussion, chaired by Vice Chairman Park Hak-gi.
Copyright experts from countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Korea engaged in heated discussions about the introduction of copyright protection systems and the challenges they face. KOMCA mentioned the current copyright registration system as a domestic issue. Although the system was established to protect copyright holders, it pointed out the ineffectiveness of the current system where most domestic music works must be registered with a public institution rather than the association where they are registered, in order to have third-party enforceability, and discussed improvement directions with the panelists.

Ella Cheong, Managing Director of Cheong LLC in Singapore, expressed deep agreement regarding Korea's copyright registration system, noting that while such a system does not exist in her country, it is a system introduced to protect copyrights. She emphasized that it is also a matter to consider when a system intended to protect copyright holders ends up failing to do so. Vice Chairman Park Hak-gi highlighted the potential of Asia's economic and cultural value, stating, “Korea and ASEAN must discover and protect intellectual property with new value and contribute to innovation for humanity.”
