Catching Minors Using Fake IDs with an App... Telecom 3 Companies Launch PASS Verification Service
Recently, there have been consecutive cases of small business owners and store operators receiving business suspensions after being deceived by minors using forged IDs to purchase alcoholic beverages. A new way has opened for store operators to easily verify whether visiting customers are adults using the PASS app without any additional equipment.
SKT, KT, and LG Uplus, the three major telecommunications companies, announced on the 22nd the launch of the ‘PASS Mobile ID Verification Service,’ which can identify adult authentication and verify the authenticity of IDs by scanning the PASS mobile ID QR code.

The PASS mobile ID consists of two types: the Resident Registration Card Mobile Verification Service and the Mobile Driver’s License Verification Service. These are recognized as having the same legal effect as physical IDs under the Resident Registration Act and the Special Act on Promotion and Convergence of Information and Communications.
The ‘PASS Mobile ID Verification Service’ works by store operators scanning the QR code of the mobile ID within the customer’s PASS app on their smartphone through the ‘QR Authentication’ menu in the PASS app. If both the store operator and the customer have the PASS app installed on their smartphones, they can easily use the service for free. It is expected to be highly utilized by store owners in industries where adult verification is crucial, such as liquor stores, and among younger customers.
From the perspective of store operators using the PASS Mobile ID Verification Service, simply scanning the QR code can prevent legal disputes caused by forged IDs in advance and easily verify adult status in accordance with the Youth Protection Act. Additionally, customers using the PASS mobile ID only need to register once to be easily authenticated without carrying a separate physical ID.
Starting today, the PASS Mobile ID Verification Service will conduct offline campaigns in major areas such as Hongdae and Gangnam, where many young people visit, to protect minors and encourage small business owners. Furthermore, store operators using the PASS Mobile ID Verification Service will be provided with a ‘PASS Mobile ID Kit,’ including banners and billboards helpful for their stores, free of charge. Applications can be made through the telecommunications companies’ application websites.
