Yoon's First APEC Stage, Proposes Smart Mobility Expansion Initiative
Call to Overcome Climate Crisis at First Session of APEC Summit
President Yoon Suk-yeol proposed the establishment of a special initiative for the spread of 'smart mobility,' stating that "the Republic of Korea will take the lead in expanding the use of Carbon Free Energy (CFE)" at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit on the 16th (local time).
In his remarks during the first session of the APEC Summit held in San Francisco, USA, President Yoon said, "The climate crisis is the most urgent challenge to overcome in order to create a sustainable future. The Republic of Korea intends to promote the transition to a clean energy system together with APEC member countries."
Referring to his proposal at the United Nations General Assembly last September to form a 'Carbon Free Alliance' to expand the use of carbon-free energy, President Yoon emphasized, "Expanding the use of clean energy along with the transition to eco-friendly transportation is the most effective solution to address climate change."
He continued, "The Republic of Korea is actively promoting the spread of smart mobility such as eco-friendly vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent transportation systems," adding, "I propose that APEC establish and promote a special initiative to ensure the spread of smart mobility throughout the member countries in the region."
He also emphasized the establishment of green shipping routes to achieve carbon neutrality in the maritime industry. President Yoon introduced, "The Republic of Korea will closely connect green ports across the Asia-Pacific region, including Korea and the United States, through eco-friendly shipping solutions."
He also shared Korea’s support plans to help Asia-Pacific countries overcome the climate crisis. President Yoon stated, "The Republic of Korea will responsibly contribute to closing the climate gap," explaining, "Through the APEC Climate Center, our country will share climate response experiences and knowledge, and support Asia-Pacific countries in building their own climate adaptation capabilities."
