Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting the establishment of a medical school at Hankyong National University.
On the 16th, Anseong City held a signing ceremony for the promotion of the establishment of the medical school at Hankyong University in the city hall's main conference room, attended by Kim Bora, Mayor of Anseong, Choi Hyeyoung, member of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Lee Wonhee, President of Hankyong National University.

The city explained that although Gyeonggi Province has the largest population concentration of 13.62 million people, the number of doctors is 1.8 per 1,000 people, which is below the national average of 2.2. The city particularly stated, "There are three private universities with medical schools in the province, but each has fewer than 50 students, which is far insufficient compared to the demand for doctors," clarifying the background for promoting the establishment of the medical school.
To this end, the day before, Representative Choi proposed the "Special Act on the Establishment of the Medical School at Hankyong National University." The bill includes ▲ establishing a medical school at Hankyong University with about 100 students, ▲ selecting students for a regional public medical course focused on essential medical care and requiring them to serve in public health care in Gyeonggi Province for 10 years after obtaining their medical license, and ▲ installing an affiliated hospital necessary for medical school education.
Mayor Kim emphasized the necessity of establishing the medical school at a press conference after the signing ceremony, saying, "If the shortage of doctors is not resolved, public medical policies will be difficult to achieve effectiveness."
President Lee explained, "If a medical school is established at Hankyong University, the only national university in Gyeonggi Province, we will fulfill the responsibility of the national university to local residents by expanding access to essential medical care for vulnerable groups."
