Jeonbuk National University Honorary Professor Ma In-suk Publishes 'Engineering Mathematics' to Build Foundations
Core Selection of Engineering Mathematics, Explained in Concise Language
"Students Struggle with Basic Math... Decided to Write"
Myung-sook Ma, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the College of Natural Sciences, Jeonbuk National University, has published a 704-page textbook titled Engineering Mathematics Essence (Hanbit Academy) to help engineering students build a solid foundation in mathematics.
The book’s features and strengths lie in its clear organization of the vast field of engineering mathematics into ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, Fourier analysis, partial differential equations, and complex analysis. Each chapter carefully selects essential topics and presents the core content concisely.

Rich examples and detailed solution processes are included to help students develop strong skills. The appendix contains essential topics in differentiation and integration necessary for understanding engineering mathematics, allowing students to review effectively.
Professor Emeritus Ma was motivated to write this book because many students struggled to build a solid foundation in mathematics during her years of teaching.
In 2017, sensing the need for a foundational engineering mathematics textbook to support students, she authored Basic Industrial Mathematics. That book focused on differential equations, vectors, and matrices tailored for a single semester. After receiving numerous questions from students self-studying with that book, she embarked on writing this engineering mathematics textbook designed for independent understanding.
The author’s main research field is algebra. She graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Jeonbuk National University, earned a Master of Science degree from the same university’s graduate school, and a Doctor of Science degree from Chonnam National University. She also served as a visiting professor at Auburn University in the United States. Since 1982, she has been a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at Jeonbuk National University.

Professor Emeritus Ma stated, “Engineering mathematics encompasses all the mathematics needed across various majors and is essential knowledge for students completing an engineering undergraduate program. I hope this book helps students strengthen their foundation in engineering mathematics and further understand their respective majors better.”
