“Autumn and Winter at the Lake and Luminaria,” which opened last month, is creating a more dazzling night view than ever before, captivating teenagers nationwide. It was found that half of the visitors to Seokchon Lake during the first three days of the festival opening were in their teens and twenties.
Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that, based on big data analysis of visitor statistics from mobile phone base stations, a total of 240,000 people visited Seokchon Lake over the three days from the festival opening on the 27th to the 29th of last month. This represents a 40% increase compared to the number of visitors during last year’s festival period.
Age group statistics show that the majority were in their teens and twenties. The largest group was people in their twenties with 55,584 visitors, followed by teenagers with 52,049 visitors. Visitors aged 20 and under accounted for about 42.7%, nearly half of the total, which is distinctive compared to the Hansung Baekje Cultural Festival held in September and the Lake Cherry Blossom Festival in April, where visitors in their twenties and thirties were the majority.
In particular, the Luminaria Festival is rapidly emerging as a hotspot for “life shots” among teenagers. Instagram posts featuring certification shots taken with the lake’s night view and Luminaria are receiving a flood of “likes,” with captions such as “Seokchon Lake already feels like year-end” and “20,000 lights + autumn leaves shining brilliantly at Seokchon Lake” heating up online. It is analyzed that the festival has captured the hearts of teenagers nationwide who quickly seek out popular photo spots.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that visitors from all 17 cities and provinces across the country have come. Residents from all over the nation visited the Luminaria Festival, including ▲Gyeonggi with 59,000 visitors ▲Incheon with 6,000 ▲Chungnam and Chungbuk with 5,000 ▲Gangwon with 3,000, and even ▲Jeju with 1,000 visitors, the farthest distance.
The weekend of October 28th and 29th, just before Halloween Day, saw an even denser crowd of young people, marking the most popular weekend among Seoul’s autonomous districts.
According to Seoul’s resident population statistics, Songpa-gu ranked first in nighttime population for that weekend. On the opening day, about 750,000 people visited, 740,000 on the 28th, and 737,000 on the 29th, enjoying the beautiful nights of Songpa.
The district immediately implemented crowd safety management measures in preparation for Halloween. The district office, police, and fire department jointly conducted on-site patrols and real-time intensive monitoring, covering Seokchon Lake where the Luminaria Festival is held, as well as the popular restaurant alleys in Bangi-dong and Sincheon-dong, and the area around Jamsil Station, ensuring that many people could safely enjoy the lake’s night view.
The Luminaria Festival, offering a fantastic feast of lights under the theme “Hearts Connected by Light,” will continue until February 29 of next year.
