The ‘Glocal University’ project is a bold innovation initiative by the government to break down internal and external barriers within universities and regional-industrial partnerships, aiming to dissolve the boundaries of regional universities. It selects universities that will lead sustainable urban growth and provides prioritized investments of 100 billion KRW and regulatory innovations over the next five years.
In this main designation evaluation, POSTECH, a research-oriented university with world-class technology and talent, received high marks for its implementation plan aiming to become a ‘world-class university that leads innovation and globalization, fostering regional prosperity and forming the foundation of the nation's future industries’ through ▲ barrier-free, demand-centered educational innovation ▲ leading regional strategic industry innovation and globalization ▲ establishing a global startup Pacific Valley that creates new industries.
With POSTECH finally selected as the Glocal University to drive mutual growth between the university and the region, Pohang City plans to form a ‘Glocal University Regional Innovation Council’ (tentative name) together with local companies, related organizations, and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province as a follow-up measure to the Glocal University project, dedicating full efforts to ensure the smooth execution of the Glocal University 30 project over the next five years.
Additionally, the city will establish a practical support system by forming a consortium of regional universities including POSTECH to promote mutual development between universities and the region. It also plans to create communication platforms to break down university walls and integrate with the local community so that the region and universities can become one community.
