Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Signs Cooperation Agreement with Saudi Intellectual Property Authority in Copyright Field
"K-Content Illegal Distribution May Subside"
On the 9th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Saudi Arabian Intellectual Property Authority for cooperation in the field of copyright. This is the first time an MOU on copyright has been signed with a Middle Eastern country. Im Seonghwan, Director of the Copyright Bureau, who visited Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, said, "Every time our delegation met with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), they showed great interest in our copyright laws and systems," adding, "Recently, they officially invited our country and expressed their intention to establish a cooperation agreement."
In 2016, Saudi Arabia announced a new national growth strategy called 'Saudi Vision 2030,' identifying the intellectual property industry as one of the core industries leading national economic development. South Korea dispatched experts from the Korea Copyright Commission to participate in the establishment of local intellectual property strategies.
The MOU is strongly oriented toward subsequent cooperation. It includes ▲ exchange of the latest information on copyright policies and laws and systems ▲ discussion of copyright issues arising from new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) ▲ cooperation in nurturing talent and exchanging experts in the copyright field ▲ raising awareness to strengthen copyright protection and joint responses to infringements. To ensure faithful implementation, it specifies the designation of dedicated personnel and the detailed preparation of business plans.
