Guro-gu Wins Excellence Award at the 2023 Korea Public Architecture Awards
Public Buildings in Cheonwang Neighborhood Park (Cheonwangsan Family Camping Site, Guro Smart Farm Center, Cheonwangsan Book Shelter) Win Excellence Award... Award Ceremony Held on the 7th at Seoul Museum of Craft Art
Guro-gu (Mayor Moon Heon-il) received the Excellence Award in the Public Architecture category (Korea Land and Housing Corporation Award) at the ‘2023 Korea Public Architecture Awards’ ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 7th.
The Public Architecture category of the Korea Public Architecture Awards is given to institutions that have contributed to creating public architecture that enhances the quality of the local environment. The awarded work is a public building within Cheonwang Neighborhood Park.
Until 2018, Cheonwang Neighborhood Park suffered severe green space damage due to illegal livestock sheds and unauthorized cultivation. In response, Guro-gu made active efforts to compensate for the long-unexecuted park land. Through various public contest projects, the park development project was promoted, and over four years, Cheonwangsan Family Camping Site, Guro Smart Farm Center, and Cheonwangsan Book Shelter were sequentially completed.
Cheonwangsan Family Camping Site is a camping ground that can be enjoyed within the city, attracting over ten thousand visitors in the first half of this year alone. The management buildings of the camping site connect the management office building and the shower building with louvered eaves, creating a view from the mountain that feels light and harmonious rather than incongruous.
The Guro Smart Farm Center, the first building visible upon entering Cheonwang Neighborhood Park, features eight gable-shaped buildings connected in a row, creating a unique atmosphere. It consists of a smart greenhouse, hydroponic cultivation room, and education center. The leafy vegetables produced in the hydroponic cultivation room are consumed in the district office cafeteria or delivered to local senior citizens.
Cheonwangsan Book Shelter is a building where natural light evenly enters through a skylight. It is divided into a book shelter wing where visitors can comfortably sit on the floor or sofas and immerse themselves in reading, and a book caf? wing that offers a panoramic view of Cheonwangsan’s nature. The exterior finishes use natural materials such as Paju stone and charred wood, blending well with the surrounding landscape.
Although the three buildings serve completely different functions, they are connected by a deck road, ensuring high accessibility. They maintain consistency in roof shapes and material usage, firmly establishing themselves as a forest-type complex cultural space representing Guro alongside Cheonwangsan.
