Gangnam-gu Wins Excellence Award for Utilizing Big Data in Building Urban Energy 3D Map
Awarded Excellence in Idea and Planning Category at Seoul Big Data Utilization Analysis Contest... Collaborated with digital demonstration partner Ninewatt to analyze urban carbon emissions using big data and AI, contributing to carbon neutrality policies
Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) won the Excellence Award at the Seoul Big Data Utilization Analysis Best Practices Competition on the 27th of last month with the ‘Gangnam-gu Urban Energy and Carbon Management System.’
This competition was held to discover outstanding cases that actively utilize the latest big data analysis technology to support policy formulation and contribute to civil complaints and administrative efficiency.
The district was recognized for analyzing the carbon emissions of all buildings in Gangnam-gu using public big data in the idea and planning category, and for establishing a ‘Urban Energy 3D Map’ based on this analysis, laying the foundation for carbon neutrality policy development.
This idea began through the first public-private cooperation digital open innovation project, ‘Gangnam Embraces Digital,’ which was planned for the first time in April to introduce digital innovation into administration. The partner company Ninewatt (CEO Kim Young-rok) utilizes publicly available data updated every three months, such as energy usage, carbon dioxide emissions, and building registers, to analyze energy consumption and carbon emissions at the building level, providing visualized information of energy usage across the entire Gangnam-gu urban area in a 3D map.

According to the government’s public sector greenhouse gas target management system, energy public buildings must reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to the baseline emissions from 2007 to 2009 (8,649 tons). The district plans to use the energy map to monitor the carbon emission status of public buildings and utilize it for policy formulation aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “The energy map built using the latest technologies such as big data and AI has been recognized as a proactive effort to reduce greenhouse gases,” and added, “We will continue to promote innovative administration using digital technology and create a sustainable smart city.”
