Incheon City to Provide Monthly Allowance of 50,000 KRW to Spouses of Deceased Veterans Starting Next Year
Incheon City announced on the 3rd that starting from January next year, it will establish and provide a 'Death Veteran Spouse Allowance.' The recipients are 6,565 spouses registered as residents in Incheon among approximately 18,000 veterans who lived in Incheon and have passed away.
This year, the city received a list of deceased veterans from the Veterans Affairs Office and confirmed the survival and residency status of their spouses in Incheon through local military districts and wards. The city plans to guide eligible recipients on how to apply for the allowance by the end of the year and to pay 50,000 KRW monthly starting from January next year.
According to the status of veterans' allowances paid by Incheon City, the allowances are provided to veterans, war casualties, and independence activists, with all except veterans having their allowances inherited. However, there is no law regarding the inheritance of the veterans' honorary allowance, so the payment of veterans' allowances ends upon the veteran's death.
Consequently, there have been opinions that veterans should also have inheritance rights similar to other veterans' beneficiaries. In September, through an ordinance amendment, a foundation was established to provide spouse allowances using Incheon City's resources regardless of existing laws. Among domestic metropolitan governments, Daejeon, Chungnam, and Jeonbuk pay a death veteran spouse allowance ranging from 20,000 to 80,000 KRW per month.
