Naju City Hosts the 1st Jeonnam Energy Industry Day Ceremony

Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Yoon Byung-tae) announced on the 2nd that it held the ‘2023 1st Jeonnam Energy Industry Day’ commemorative ceremony at the Jungheung Gold Spa Resort the day before.

Energy Industry Day was designated by Jeollanam-do as its own commemorative day to solidify its identity as a hub of the energy industry and to foster it as a future vision and strategic industry.

In particular, the significance was enhanced by holding the first commemorative ceremony in Naju City, which has led the creation of the energy industry ecosystem, attraction of Energy Valley companies, and growth and development.

The ceremony was attended by about 200 people including Mayor Yoon Byung-tae, Park Chang-hwan Jeonnam Provincial Government Deputy Governor for Political Affairs, Shin Jeong-hoon Naju-Hwasun National Assembly member, Lee Sang-man Chairman of the City Council, Lee Junho Vice President of Korea Electric Power Corporation, Kim Yushin Chairman of Jeonnam Energy Industry Association, Jang Chung-mo Chairman of Jeonnam Wind Power Industry Association, as well as representatives of energy companies and executives of related organizations.

The first part of the event, co-hosted by Jeonnam Province and Naju City, proceeded in the order of pre-ceremony performance, vision video screening, opening remarks and congratulatory speeches, awards ceremony for meritorious persons, performance, and commemorative photo session.

On this day, Mayor Yoon Byung-tae awarded the Naju City Mayor’s Commendation to Choi Seung-hyun of Sweco Jinkwang Co., Ltd., Lee Jun-beom of DM Tech Co., Ltd., and Kang Ji-sung of Korea Gridforming Co., Ltd. for their contributions to the development of the energy industry and Energy Valley.

Sweco Jinkwang Co., Ltd. has led research and development and technological innovation of circuit breakers and disconnectors for 33 years, achieving $3 million in sales in 2019 and $7 million in exports in 2022, contributing to the development of Energy Valley by pioneering overseas new markets.

DM Tech Co., Ltd. plays a key industrial role in the development of renewable energy facilities and solutions. In particular, it developed a pre-cooling air conditioning automatic control system, contributing to the advancement of the energy industry including carbon reduction.

Korea Gridforming Co., Ltd., a research institute company leading Energy Valley technology such as establishing a domestic demonstration environment for gridforming technology, has developed solutions to secure power grid robustness and reduce output limitations in response to power grid weakness issues caused by the expansion of DC renewable energy such as solar power, striving to develop technologies aligned with national energy transition policies.

In addition to the Naju City Mayor’s Commendation, 24 individuals from industry, academia, and research who contributed to the creation of Energy Valley and the development of Jeonnam’s energy industry received awards or plaques of appreciation.

The vision video screened at the ceremony included the future vision of Jeonnam’s energy industry such as large-scale agro-photovoltaic complexes, the 8.2GW offshore wind power complex in Sinan, the development of RE100 dedicated industrial complexes, and the fostering of the hydrogen industry.

The second part of the event, held as an independent event by the Jeonnam Energy Industry Association and Jeonnam Wind Power Industry Association, provided a time for harmony and communication among energy industry, academia, and research stakeholders through a special lecture by a distinguished guest and a banquet.

Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said, “Following the successful Seoul COEX metropolitan area investment attraction roadshow held in October, I am pleased and honored to hold the Jeonnam Energy Industry Day commemorative ceremony in Naju with businesspeople who are striving for the development of the energy industry and the revitalization of Energy Valley.”

He added, “In 2024, we will firmly establish the status of Jeonnam as the energy capital of Korea by hosting the first-ever energy expo leading the future together with related organizations in the region, and we will strive to strengthen the competitiveness of energy companies and create growth engines.”

Furthermore, he emphasized, “The city will continue to promote the attraction of national large-scale research facilities such as the ultra-high-power laser research facility and artificial sun research institute together with Jeonnam Province, the creation of a 400,000㎡ scale industry-academia-research energy cluster, designation of global innovation special zones, opportunity development special zones, and distributed energy special zones. We will build the best energy new industry ecosystem and infrastructure favorable for business in Korea.”
