Two People Who Live-Streamed 'Extreme Choice' on SNS Rescued After Viewer Report
Two Women Attempted Suicide Indoors
Discovered at Hospital Where They Were Receiving Mental Illness Treatment
Two women who broadcast their extreme actions live on social networking services (SNS) were safely rescued following viewer reports.
According to the Gwangju Bukbu Police Station on the 31st, at around 11:29 p.m. the previous day, a woman in her 20s, Ms. A, and a teenage girl, Ms. B, engaged in extreme actions inside an apartment room in Gwangju. They exposed this scene live through SNS, and a viewer who saw it reported it to the police.
The two were immediately transported to a hospital by the 119 emergency medical team and are reported to be in stable condition without life-threatening injuries.
It was reported that they met while receiving treatment for mental illness at a hospital. In particular, Ms. A has been under intensive management by related agencies, having attempted self-harm and other extreme choices dozens of times over the past 3 to 4 years.
The police plan to review whether they can apply charges such as distributing suicide-inducing information and assisting suicide once the two recover their health.
This is not the first time that the actions of ordinary people attempting extreme choices have been shared through live broadcasts. In April of this year, a teenage student died by suicide after jumping from a 19-story building in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. At that time, his SNS live broadcast was on. Some viewers reported it to the police, but by the time the police arrived, he had already taken the extreme action.
An official from the Gwangju Suicide Prevention Center explained, "Broadcasting or sharing information that executes or induces suicide through online broadcasts can itself be subject to criminal punishment," adding, "Recruiting suicide companions or providing specific methods of suicide will also be punishable." They further urged, "Viewers who witness such incidents online should immediately report them to the relevant authorities."
