Gwangju Seo-gu Conducts Intensive Crackdown on Smoking Bans in Public Facilities and Other Areas
Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Ikang) announced on the 31st that it recently conducted a 'Joint Inspection and Crackdown on No-Smoking Zones' to prevent damage to residents caused by secondhand smoke.
This joint inspection was carried out through cooperation between the public and private sectors, including Gwangju Metropolitan City, Seobu Police Station, and no-smoking guides, forming three teams to inspect 10,072 locations within Seo-gu, including ▲public facilities and medical institutions designated as public use facilities under the National Health Promotion Act ▲no-smoking zones in common residential areas such as apartment hallways ▲no-smoking zones within 10 meters of kindergartens and daycare centers ▲urban parks and bus stops designated by ordinance.

The main inspection items included ▲smoking behavior within no-smoking zones ▲compliance with facility standards for no-smoking zones and smoking rooms ▲compliance with installation locations and adult verification device attachment standards for cigarette vending machines. Minor violations were immediately corrected and educated on-site, and a fine of up to 100,000 KRW was imposed for smoking detected within no-smoking zones.
Shim Hyojeong, Director of Health Promotion at Seo-gu, said, “We will continue to create a healthy Seo-gu free of tobacco smoke through ongoing inspections, no-smoking campaigns, and promotional and guidance activities.”
Meanwhile, Seo-gu has posted no-smoking banners in major public places and conducted various no-smoking activities such as public-private cooperative no-smoking campaigns. The Seo-gu Public Health Center also operates a no-smoking clinic at all times to assist smokers who have decided to quit smoking.
