Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, Presents Longevity Cane to Centenarian Senior Citizen
On the afternoon of the 26th, Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, visited elderly citizens who have reached 100 years of age to commemorate the 27th Senior Citizens' Day, presenting them with the longevity cane called Cheongryeojang and a letter from the President, wishing them long life and good health.
Since 1993, the government has gifted the Cheongryeojang to centenarians. This cane, made from the stem of the Myeongaju plant, symbolizes health and longevity, and is popular for being lightweight and sturdy.
Additionally, it is a historically significant cane said to have been personally bestowed by kings from the Unified Silla period through the Joseon Dynasty.
An elderly recipient of the Cheongryeojang said, "It is an honor that the mayor personally came to my home to deliver the cane sent by the President."
Furthermore, Mayor Park Gang-su did not forget to encourage and express gratitude to the families supporting the elderly.
