Ministry of Culture Holds Seoul Copyright Forum on 26th
Invites Numerous Experts to Seek Solutions for Norm Organization
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Copyright Commission will hold the Seoul Copyright Forum on the 26th at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel. They will share information on legislation and trends related to artificial intelligence and copyright, and gauge global trends. The main topic is generative artificial intelligence, such as the recently emerging Chat-GPT. Due to intense conflicts of interest, there is a growing call for regulatory frameworks. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has invited numerous domestic and international government, industry, and academic experts to lead discussions on international regulations for AI copyright. They will exchange in-depth information on the latest legislation, industry trends, and legal issues.
The keynote speech will be delivered by Mira Sundara Rajan, a professor at the University of California (UC) Los Angeles School of Law. She will examine current issues in AI and copyright and propose solutions. Han-gyu Ko, Senior Researcher at LG Electronics AI Research Institute; Maxwell Shields, Legal Director at Midjourney in the U.S.; and Sun-cheol Hwang, Director of Business Division 2 at the Korea Music Copyright Association, will discuss generative AI’s creative technologies and copyright status. Andrew Foglia, Deputy Director of Policy and International Cooperation at the U.S. Copyright Office; Seung-gyun Gye, Professor at Pusan National University School of Law; Alina Trapova, Professor at University College London Faculty of Laws; Gavin Foo, Head of Copyright Division at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore; Hye-seon Yoon, Professor at Hanyang University School of Law; and Hye-chang Kim, Director of Policy Research at the Korea Copyright Commission, will explain legal challenges related to generative AI and suggest improvements.

Seong-hwan Lim, Director of the Copyright Bureau at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “It will be a meaningful occasion to introduce the ‘AI-Copyright Utilization Guide’ for the first time and gather experts’ opinions.” The ‘AI-Copyright Utilization Guide’ is the result of the ‘AI and Copyright Law System Improvement Working Group’ operated by the Ministry and the Korea Copyright Commission since February. It contains diverse opinions from academia, the legal community, and industry regarding the AI-copyright policy environment.
