Magnitude 3.4 Earthquake in Gongju, Chungnam... "Fifth Magnitude Earthquake This Year"
A fifth earthquake of the year occurred in Gongju, Chungnam.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 26th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 occurred around 9:45 PM the previous day, 12 km south-southwest of Gongju-si, Chungnam (Dalsan-ri, Iin-myeon).
The estimated depth of the epicenter was 12 km, and there were consecutive calls from citizens startled by the earthquake in Daejeon and Sejong as well.
The instrumental intensity (degree of shaking) was highest in Chungnam at 5. Daejeon, Sejong, and Jeonbuk, adjacent to Chungnam, were analyzed to have an instrumental intensity of 3, while Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gyeongbuk, and Chungbuk had an instrumental intensity of 2.
The Gongju earthquake was the fifth largest in magnitude among earthquakes that occurred in South Korea and surrounding waters this year. It is understood that a total of 87 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 or higher occurred in South Korea and surrounding waters this year.
Considering that the average annual number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 or higher since 1999 is 70.6, this is recorded as a relatively high number.
