Production of Dokdo Paintings and Operation of Pop-up Events

Convenience store GS25 announced on the 25th that it will carry out a unique project themed "Dokdo and the Beauty of Dokdo" to commemorate Dokdo Day.

GS25 planned this project to encourage nationwide interest in Dokdo and to reaffirm the commitment to protect the territory. Starting with the creation of a Dokdo illustration, the project will showcase various Dokdo-related content through activities such as operating a Dokdo pop-up store, collaborating with Dokdo Munbanggu, and donating to the Dokdo Museum.

First, in collaboration with illustrator Seungbae Kim, GS25 produced a giant Dokdo painting titled "Once Upon a Time," measuring approximately 3 meters (3333mm) wide and 2 meters (1970mm) tall. The painting features the legendary sea lion Gangchi at its center, along with various marine creatures of Dokdo and 91 large and small islands. Detailed drawing processes will be revealed through GS25’s official Instagram and YouTube channels.

From the 25th, a Dokdo-themed pop-up store will be operated for seven days at MetaGround in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. GS25 designed the exhibition space so that visitors can experience various Dokdo-related content and naturally realize the preciousness of Dokdo. One side of the pop-up store features a media art zone that recreates the vivid atmosphere and presence of Dokdo. Using a large curved media wall, media art wave videos produced in-house by MetaFactory are screened, while the collaborative artwork "Once Upon a Time" is exhibited on the front of the media wall.

The collaboration with Dokdo Munbanggu, a local company from Ulleungdo that produces Dokdo souvenirs, takes place in the goods zone inside the pop-up store. Souvenirs inspired by Dokdo’s marine creatures and rare plants are displayed, and various prizes such as Dokdo Gangchi dolls and Dokdo glass cups are given away through social media (SNS) events. GS25 plans to conclude this project by donating "Once Upon a Time" to the Dokdo Museum, the only territorial museum in Korea.

A GS Retail official stated, "GS25 plans various activities every year to remind people of the importance of Dokdo. Especially from this year, we reinterpret the somewhat serious theme of patriotism into trendy content that fits GS25’s fun brand image, establishing ourselves as a culture retail leader that embraces even the Well-Pa-Se generation."
