The lecture was held as part of an event inviting Holtec partners, and about 400 people attended, including Hyundai Engineering & Construction executives and employees, as well as personnel from nuclear-related organizations and associations such as the Korea Nuclear Power Export Industry Association, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and KEPCO Nuclear Fuel, along with industry and academia representatives.
Chairman Sing, who earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, currently serves as a senior researcher and advisor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the same university and has served as an honorary professor at the University of South Florida research institute.
Holtec, founded by him in 1986, is a nuclear specialized company holding over 100 patents in core areas such as nuclear power plant design, materials, and manufacturing. With 19 subsidiaries and operations across five continents, it holds the world's number one market share in spent nuclear fuel storage facilities and the number one market share in nuclear power plant decommissioning in the United States, securing a dominant position across the entire nuclear power business.
In November 2021, Hyundai Engineering & Construction signed an exclusive contract with Holtec and is jointly carrying out projects across the entire nuclear power value chain, including ▲ SMR development and business promotion ▲ nuclear power plant decommissioning business ▲ construction of temporary spent nuclear fuel storage facilities.
The two companies are expanding their global influence to become a representative model of international nuclear power projects by jointly exploring entry into more than 15 countries, including Europe, with the SMR-160 model currently under commercialization.
In the lecture, Chris Sing stated, "Since the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century based on fossil fuels in the UK, the world is preparing for another energy revolution, and investment in low-carbon energy has already exceeded a record $1 trillion," adding, "In the next-generation clean energy era, nuclear power will play a central role beyond any other renewable energy, and its market potential is also limitless," expressing strong confidence.
A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official said, "As competition for the next-generation nuclear power plant SMR intensifies, Chairman Chris Sing's visit to Korea has further solidified the trust and position between Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Holtec," adding, "Since the two companies are cooperating to build the first SMR at the Palisades nuclear power plant site in the United States, please look forward to tangible results."
