Busan, the Esports Mecca City, Hosts the 'National Office Workers Esports Tournament'
October 28 at Busan Esports Stadium, 6th Busan Mayor's Cup Held
Three Events: 'League of Legends', 'StarCraft', and 'Exhibition Matches'
Busan City and the Busan Information Industry Promotion Agency will hold the "6th Busan Metropolitan City Mayor's Cup National Office Worker Esports Tournament" at the Busan Esports Stadium on October 28.
Now in its 6th year, the "Busan Metropolitan City Mayor's Cup National Office Worker Esports Tournament" will feature a total of three categories: two team events, ▲League of Legends and ▲StarCraft, and one demonstration event ▲(Busan regional game · individual competition) aimed at promoting participation in local games.
League of Legends will be played with teams of five players, StarCraft with teams of three players, and the demonstration event will feature a game selected separately from those serviced by developers in the Busan region.
Last year, Afreeca TV won the League of Legends category, and LG Electronics won the StarCraft category, contributing greatly not only to company promotion and employee unity but also to the activation of esports culture among office workers.
This year’s tournament allows office workers who are active together in various groups such as clubs, small gatherings, and clans, in addition to those belonging to the same workplace, to participate as teams. By changing the preliminary competition format, the tournament lowers participation barriers for office workers, allowing many to freely enjoy leisure activities after work.
The preliminary rounds, which were previously conducted as a tournament over a maximum of two days, have been changed to a 10-day point system, expanding participation opportunities for office workers.
Participants can join a total of 30 matches held online every evening at 8 PM, 9 PM, and 10 PM over 10 days. They will compete against randomly matched opposing teams in each match to accumulate points in the preliminary rounds.
The top 16 teams with the highest points in the preliminaries will compete in the round of 16 knockout stage at the finals on October 22, and only the top 4 teams in each category will advance to the final championship on October 28.
Applications for the tournament are open until October 19 through the official website of the Busan Esports Stadium.
To participate in the online preliminaries starting at 8 PM daily from October 12 for 10 days, applicants must complete their registration at least two days before their desired competition date.
The total prize money for the tournament is approximately 12 million KRW, and matches will be broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of the Busan Esports Stadium.
On the day of the finals, the demonstration event (Busan regional game) will be held with on-site registration at the Busan Esports Stadium, along with various side programs such as experience zones, cafeterias, and prize events.
Kim Ki-hwan, Director of the Culture and Sports Bureau, said, "As this esports tournament has received high interest from office workers every year, we are preparing to enable many office workers to participate." He added, "Following the October Mayor's Cup National Office Worker Esports Tournament, Busan will continue the esports momentum with the hosting of the 2023 League of Legends World Championship in November, and we ask for the citizens' active interest and participation."
