Hanwha Systems In-house Venture Collaborates with Energy Research Institute to Develop Space Solar Cells
Accelerating Development of 'Solar Cells' as Power Source for Satellite Industry
Hanwha Systems' in-house venture team is partnering with the Korea Institute of Energy Research's Solar Energy Research Group to embark on the next-generation space solar cell business.
Hanwha Systems' in-house venture 'Flexell Space' signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) on the morning of the 13th at KIER's headquarters in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, to develop and collaborate on 'space tandem solar cell' technology. Space tandem solar cells are next-generation products that stack two solar cells to complementarily absorb sunlight in different wavelength ranges, thereby increasing efficiency.

Flexell Space and the Solar Energy Research Group will jointly develop 'space tandem solar cells' by combining CIGS and perovskite types of solar cells, integrating Hanwha Systems' space business capabilities with KIER's solar cell technology. They will also collaborate in areas such as solar cell manufacturing processes and business model establishment.
Flexell Space was launched last month to introduce innovative space solar cell technologies and develop tandem solar cells amid increasing demand for next-generation solar cell development. Since 2021, Hanwha Systems has been operating 'Frontier,' an in-house venture nurturing program, the first of its kind in the defense industry.
KIER is a government-funded research institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT that researches and develops industrial core technologies to ensure energy security and national competitiveness. It is internationally recognized in the fields of energy technology and research.
