‘FutureSelf’ and ‘Trend Korea 2024’ Reach Bestseller Top Spot
In the Yes24 comprehensive bestseller list for the second week of October, organizational psychologist Benjamin Hardy's 'Future Self,' which teaches how to apply the concept of 'the future me,' held the number one spot for two consecutive weeks. South Korea's representative trend forecast book, 'Trend Korea 2024,' rose four spots from 6th place last week to 2nd place, while Mind Miner Song Gil-young's forecast of the future landscape, 'Era Forecast: The Age of the Nuclear Individual,' climbed one spot to 3rd place compared to the previous week.
Following these, Kim Cho-yeop's new full-length novel 'The Dispatched' reached 4th place on the Yes24 comprehensive bestseller list and 1st place in the novel/poetry/drama category through pre-orders alone. Haruki Murakami's completed world, 'The City and Its Uncertain Walls,' took 5th place.
In the essay category, various new releases also attracted attention. The popular Instagram toon 'Tintintinkle' inspired '2024 Tintintinkle Attachment Calendar,' which contains daily healing words, ranked 8th overall and 1st in the essay category through pre-orders alone. Sports journalist and baseball enthusiast Yoon Se-ho, with 13 years of experience, released his first essay for fans titled 'Let's All Shout the Victory Cheer Together,' which shares sincere stories about the popular LG Twins team, achieving 15th place overall.
Interest also focused on the works of Nobel Literature Prize winner Jon Fosse, with his representative work 'Morning and Evening' ranking 11th overall. According to Yes24's data, sales of 'Morning and Evening' during the week following the award announcement (October 5?11) were about 50 times the annual sales volume for this year.
At Kyobo Bookstore, 'Trend Korea 2024,' a leading book in the domestic economic forecast market, took the top spot on the comprehensive bestseller list upon release. Looking at the buyers, male readers accounted for 52.4% of purchases, slightly higher than female readers at 47.6%, but by age group, women in their 30s had the highest purchase rate at 15.9%. Last year, 'Trend Korea 2023' was loved by readers, holding the number one spot on the comprehensive bestseller list for 11 weeks, raising expectations for continued reader support for the 2024 edition.
Yang Gui-ja's 'Contradiction' returned to number one in the Korean novel category for the first time since its initial publication in 1998. After entering the top 20 in the novel category in early 2020, it has steadily maintained its ranking, and interest is presumed to have increased this year through introductions by YouTubers and others.
