Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the '2023 Nowon Book Festival: Reflection' at Sanggye Neighborhood Park on October 15.
The Book Festival is the district's representative book culture festival aimed at establishing a local reading culture by selecting a specific theme and representative books each year in connection with the 'Nowon-gu One Book Reading' program.
This year's festival carries the theme 'We All Become Elderly' and embraces reflections on life. Using four themed spaces?Life, Spring, Forest, and Rest?it offers performances, exhibitions, and experiential programs where all generations, from children to seniors, can come together.
The Life space is the festival's core area, featuring an outdoor library stocked with about 1,000 books on various topics. The entire playground is equipped with sunshades, comfortable beanbags, camping chairs, and Indian tents, allowing anyone to read freely.
At 2:30 PM, a book concert with author Lee Hyun-soo titled 'I Decided to Age as Myself' is scheduled. The author, a psychology Ph.D. who has worked in numerous clinical settings including the ancient Guro Hospital, will provide concrete guidance on 'how to embrace aging in a way that is true to oneself and peaceful,' based on her experiences and research on aging.
A sculpture made from recycled discarded books also captures visitors' attention. The sculpture 'Waterfall of Knowledge,' depicting books pouring down from a wall, serves as a symbolic icon of this Book Festival, representing the experience of encountering a waterfall of knowledge through books.
The Spring space centers around books. It exhibits various books recommended by libraries and bookstore cooperatives, along with children's writing works. At the book market hosted by the Bookstore Cooperative Madeul, visitors can purchase books at 10% below the regular price.
The Forest and Rest spaces operate 20 experiential booths offering small-scale performances such as human book lectures, busking, and puppet shows, as well as VR/AR experiences, solar observation, panorama book making, and pop-up card making using discarded books.
Additionally, various side events provide entertainment, including a choir performance by Yeonchon Elementary School Children's Choir, congratulatory performances by Atti Classic & Haegum Groove, and youth dance performances.
The opening ceremony will be held on the 15th from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the main stage of the Sanggye Neighborhood Park playground. Following the opening ceremony and congratulatory performances, awards will be presented to library officials and users, along with a prize ceremony for the library slogan selected last May, 'Unfold Your Heart, Read Life.'
