Kim Sung, North Korea's Ambassador to the UN, "Nuclear war could break out anytime... Accelerating self-defense capabilities"
Kim Song, North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, stated that the risk of nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula is escalating, and that they will strengthen their self-defense capabilities.
On the 26th (local time), Ambassador Kim said in his speech during the general debate of the 78th UN General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters in New York, "The Korean Peninsula is on the brink of a nuclear war that could break out at any moment," adding, "The more reckless military adventures and challenges by hostile forces increase, the more our efforts to strengthen national defense will proportionally intensify."
He continued, "The Republic's determination to protect the nation's sovereignty and security is unchanging." Ambassador Kim's remarks appear to reiterate North Korea's existing stance that it will not give up its nuclear weapons.
Ambassador Kim claimed that the escalating crisis on the Korean Peninsula is due to the United States and South Korea. He said, "Since the beginning of the year, the United States and the Republic of Korea have repeatedly conducted joint military exercises with clear aggressive nature, while spouting hysterical confrontational remarks such as the end of the regime and the occupation of Pyongyang." He further asserted, "The United States has put into practice the plan to establish an Asia version of NATO by forming the US-Japan-ROK triangular military alliance system, and a new Cold War structure has been established in the Northeast Asia region."
On this day, Ambassador Kim omitted President Yoon's title and referred to the South Korean government as a "puppet government." He raised his voice against President Yoon Suk-yeol's recent warning at the UN General Assembly about the possibility of arms transactions between North Korea and Russia, stating, "The development of equal and friendly relations among sovereign countries is not a matter for the Republic of Korea, which is nothing but a colony of the United States, to interfere in."
At the same time, Ambassador Kim also expressed dissatisfaction toward the UN Security Council (UNSC) for discussing North Korean human rights issues. He claimed, "The Security Council discussing the human rights situation of individual countries unrelated to its authority is an insult to the UN Charter."

Furthermore, Ambassador Kim addressed the issue of Japan's discharge of contaminated water, saying, "Japan has caused irreversible harm to human life safety and the marine ecological environment, but the Security Council remains silent," and added, "To prevent the arbitrary actions of hostile forces including the United States in the Security Council, the representation of developing countries (Global South), which constitute the majority of UN member states, must be expanded."
