LG Electronics Achieves World's Longest 500m Outdoor Wireless Data Transmission in 6G Terahertz Band
LG Uplus Demonstrates Wireless Data Transmission and Reception
LG Electronics "Accelerates Securing Core 6G Technology"
LG Electronics has succeeded in wireless data transmission and reception over a 500m distance in the 6G terahertz (THz) band, one of the longest ranges in the world. LG Electronics explained that this is a significant achievement as it brings the commercialization of indoor and outdoor urban 6G terahertz communication one step closer. Terahertz wireless transmission technology is a core 6G mobile communication technology that uses the terahertz frequency band from 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz·GHz) to 10 THz to achieve ultra-high-speed data transmission speeds of up to 1 terabit per second (1 Tbps).
LG Electronics announced that it succeeded in 500m data transmission and reception during a 6G terahertz band wireless data transmission test conducted over two weeks from the 11th to the 25th at the LG Science Park area in Magok, Seoul, where it was allocated a test frequency. The 500m distance is one of the longest in urban areas worldwide. The standard interval for high-power base stations in urban areas is 500m.
This achievement came one year after successfully conducting 320m 6G wireless transmission and reception outdoors at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, Germany, last year. In the previous year, LG Electronics jointly developed core 6G transmission and reception equipment such as multi-channel power amplifiers, low-noise receiving signal amplifiers, and adaptive beamforming solutions with the Fraunhofer Institute. After recent performance optimizations, the wireless transmission output of the equipment was improved by more than 50%. The significance is greater not only because of the success in 500m wireless transmission and reception but also because the 6G applicability was verified through various communication scenario tests, including building-to-building, building-to-ground terminal, and ground terminal-to-terminal communications.

6G enables immersive real-time content transmission, ultra-low latency and high-reliability transmission, communication-artificial intelligence (AI) integration, and communication-sensing integration. It can be applied to LG Electronics’ future new industries such as autonomous driving, mobility, metaverse, smart homes, and smart factories. Discussions on 6G standardization are expected to begin around 2025, with commercialization anticipated around 2029. LG Electronics considers it very important to accumulate technological capabilities from the early research and development (R&D) stages.
Since 2019, LG Electronics has established Korea’s first 6G industry-academic cooperation research center with KAIST and secured fundamental 6G technologies through industry-academic cooperation projects with excellent domestic and international universities. It has also built a 6G core technology R&D cooperation belt with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), and Keysight Technologies Inc. Notably, since 2021, LG Electronics has been the only Korean company serving as the chair company in the Next G Alliance, a 6G technology organization led by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) in the United States, overseeing projects to discover 6G communication technology use cases and establish technical requirements.
