Samsung SDI has strengthened its eco-friendly management to recycle 100% of its waste into resources.
On the 20th, Samsung SDI announced that all its domestic business sites have obtained the highest grade, Platinum, in the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification from UL Solutions, a global safety science company.
The 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification is divided into Platinum (100%), Gold (99~95%), and Silver (94~90%) grades based on the recycling rate of waste. It is used as a global indicator to evaluate companies' resource circulation efforts.
Samsung SDI's Giheung and Cheongju plants achieved a 100% waste recycling rate this year as well as last year, earning the Platinum grade for two consecutive years.
The Cheonan, Ulsan, Gumi, and Suwon plants also obtained the Platinum grade this year, making all domestic business sites achieve the highest grade.
Since 2019, Samsung SDI has continuously invested in waste recycling. In cooperation with recycling partners, it has established and operates a system to recover and recycle key raw materials such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium from process scrap, which is waste generated during battery manufacturing.
In addition, in May last year, Samsung SDI established a 'Recycling Research Lab' within the SDI Research Center, focusing on improving battery material recovery rates and developing eco-friendly material recovery technologies.
Samsung SDI plans to expand the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification to all overseas business sites. Among Samsung SDI's overseas sites, the Wuxi plant in China has been certified Platinum, while the plants in Hungary and Tianjin, China, have been certified Gold.
Once certifications are completed for sites in Malaysia, Vietnam, and others, all domestic and overseas business sites will have obtained the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification within the year.
In particular, Samsung SDI aims to increase the waste recycling rate of overseas business sites certified Gold by next year so that all global business sites will achieve the Platinum grade.
Samsung SDI is also enhancing its eco-friendly management through expanding the waste recycling rate. The eco-friendly management, announced in October last year, is being implemented under two themes: 'Climate Change Response' and 'Resource Circulation,' with detailed tasks underway. This zero waste certification supports Samsung SDI's efforts to maximize resource circulation.
