Pirelli Equips Tires on Most New Electric Vehicle Brands at 'IAA Mobility 2023'
BEV and PHEV Vehicle Tire Approvals Double Compared to Previous Year
PIRELLI solidified its position as a ‘global leader’ in the premium and prestige electric vehicle tire sector through Europe’s largest auto show, ‘IAA Mobility 2023,’ held in Munich, Germany, from September 5 to 10 (local time).
Among all the new electric vehicles exhibited at this auto show, Pirelli equipped 25% of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 30% of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with a variety of tire models ranging from ‘P Zero’ to ‘Scorpio.’ All these tires featured the Elect marking, indicating tires specifically designed for electric vehicles.
Pirelli’s electric vehicle-specific tires, developed to meet the requirements of each individual model, have received over 300 product homologations since their first launch in 2019 and are used on various electric vehicles. As the electric vehicle market grows, demand for such products has surged, with Pirelli’s electric vehicle tires increasing at more than twice the speed (+125%) compared to the same period last year as of the first half of 2023, enhancing its reputation in the global electric vehicle market. Notably, the only hydrogen vehicle at ‘IAA Mobility 2023,’ the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, was equipped with Pirelli’s ‘P Zero’ tires made from natural rubber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), making it the world’s only tire with the FSC® mark, drawing significant attention.
Piero Misani, Pirelli’s Senior Vice President of Research & Development and Cyber, stated, “Pirelli’s leadership in electric mobility highlights innovation in our R&D sector. Pirelli is the only manufacturer capable of applying electric mobility-specific technology across all product lines.” He added, “Through this approach, we have secured the diversity to offer customized tires best suited to the characteristics of each vehicle for various automakers. Demand for customized BEV and PHEV tires is rapidly increasing, and with the launch of the new ‘P Zero E,’ more Elect product homologations are expected.”
Pirelli Elect, the customized technology for electric vehicles, is a technology package developed to complement the unique characteristics of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. These vehicles have special requirements such as heavy weight and immediate torque, making tires more critical compared to other vehicles.
The structure and materials used in Elect tires meet these demands, enhancing durability. The silent powertrain emphasizes acoustic comfort, and this technology can reduce interior noise by up to 20%. Battery range is equally important, and using tires with reduced rolling resistance can extend driving distance. According to Pirelli’s tests, a fully charged vehicle’s driving range can increase by up to 10%.
