Jungnangcheon Stream Walkway and Underpass in Jungnang-gu with Music Playing
Starting This Month, Music Broadcasts Begin at Jungnangcheon Rose Tunnel Walkway and 3 Underground Passages
Creating Healing Spaces on Walkways and Crime Prevention in Underground Passages
Over 100 Classical Music Pieces Played Daily through 81 Speakers
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has started broadcasting music along the Jungnangcheon walking trail and in three underground passages from this month.
To operate the "Jungnang Music Walk," which features classical music, the district installed a total of 81 speakers along a 1 km stretch from the entrance of the Jangmi Tunnel on Jungnangcheon to Surim Grand Park, as well as in the ▲Sangbong Railroad Underpass ▲Saemamaeumgil Connecting Walkway ▲Bonghwang Underpass.
Classical music broadcasting, one of the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies, is known to provide psychological stability and reduce aggressive impulses when played in locations with potential crime risks, thereby helping to suppress criminal behavior.
The district aims to utilize this effect to prevent crimes in underground passages and create a safer environment. Additionally, by offering diverse music, the Jungnangcheon walking trail is intended to become a healing space where nature and culture harmoniously coexist.
At Jangmi Tunnel, about 100 classical music pieces are broadcast daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and in the underground passages from 7 a.m. to midnight.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "I hope the beautiful classical melodies will completely change the atmosphere of the underground passages, which have been perceived as dark and scary places, making them spaces where residents can feel comfortable using at any time. We will continue to strive for a safe walking environment and crime prevention for our residents."
The district plans to analyze the operational effects of the music broadcasts along the Jungnangcheon walking trail and the three underground passages, gather residents' feedback, and expand music broadcasting to other walking trails in the area in the future.
