Rolls-Royce Man Visits Hospital: 10,281 Narcotic Prescriptions Over 5 Years

A man known as the 'Rolls-Royce Man,' Shin Mo (28), who drove under the influence of drugs and hit a pedestrian, leaving her in a brain-dead state, was found to have visited a hospital that prescribed more than 10,000 narcotics over five years.
According to the narcotics prescription status of Clinic A in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, submitted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to Representative Seo Young-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea on the 14th, from 2019 to June of this year, 8 types of narcotics including propofol, midazolam, ketamine, and zolpidem were prescribed 10,281 times. During this period, 2,391 patients received prescriptions, with a total of 4,925 prescription instances.
The most prescribed narcotic was propofol, prescribed 6,602 times to 1,288 patients over 2,396 instances. Midazolam was prescribed 1,899 times to 622 patients over 1,634 instances, and ketamine was prescribed 844 times to 452 patients over 842 instances.
The Violent Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Shin Junho) indicted Shin on the 6th on charges including hit-and-run causing injury under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, dangerous driving causing injury, and failure to take measures after an accident under the Road Traffic Act. Shin is accused of rushing his Rolls-Royce vehicle into a woman in her 20s walking on the sidewalk near Apgujeong Station in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, at around 8:10 p.m. on the 2nd of last month and fleeing the scene without providing aid. Seven types of psychotropic drugs, including ketamine, were detected in Shin's body.

So far, more than 10 hospitals and clinics have been searched by the police in connection with Shin receiving narcotics prescriptions or being involved in drug-related allegations. The police are investigating whether the narcotics were prescribed and administered for medical purposes and, even if for medical purposes, whether they were prescribed excessively beyond necessity.
