Jeongeup-si Selected for Urban Regeneration Project Contest Hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk announced on the 5th that the ‘Jangmyeong-dong Gaksidari Site Our Neighborhood Revitalization Project’ has been finally selected in the 2023 Urban Regeneration Project (Our Neighborhood Revitalization) competition hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Our Neighborhood Revitalization is an urban vitality project aimed at improving residential environments, enhancing urban landscapes, revitalizing alleys, and supporting vulnerable residents by expanding convenience facilities and shared-use facilities in old small-scale residential areas.
The selected Jeongeup City urban regeneration project is of the Our Neighborhood Revitalization type, targeting the improvement of aging residential environments such as residential area maintenance and home repairs in small-scale residential areas.
During the preparation process for this competition project, the city promoted the Jangmyeong-dong urban regeneration preliminary project and held an urban regeneration university, establishing plans based on residents’ opinions. As a result, after two attempts at the competition following last year, it was finally selected.
With this selection, a total project budget of 8.2 billion KRW, including 4.5 billion KRW in national funds, will be invested over four years from 2024 to 2027 to improve living and residential conditions in the Jangmyeong-dong area.
The city set the vision of ‘Jangmyeong: 長命, where people care for the village and the village cares for people,’ establishing three goals: ▲ a pleasant and safe Gaksidari Village ▲ a Gaksidari Village that connects people ▲ a Gaksidari Village where people live together harmoniously.
To achieve these goals, the city plans to implement projects such as companion projects (home repair support, alley environment improvement), creation of pedestrian safety environments, making safe villages, and establishing Gaksidari meeting places and rest areas.
In particular, three old police station residential buildings that had been left as eyesores and identified as crime-prone areas for decades will be demolished, and a Gaksidari meeting place, a shared-use facility for residents, will be created to provide a safe and pleasant living environment for residents.
Mayor Lee Hak-su said, “With this selection, the historic and traditional Jangmyeong-dong is expected to become a safer and more livable people-centered village,” adding, “It is expected that the Jangmyeong-dong area, an old downtown area experiencing both population outflow and aging, will regain urban vitality through this project.”
