According to major local media Corriere della Sera on the 23rd (local time), Federico Macchieri, who works as a human resources officer in Milan, visited the 4-star resort Voi Colonna Valledoria on the northern part of Sardinia Island for vacation on the 15th.
He went to the dessert buffet next to the resort pool with his 14-year-old daughter and was shocked to see a woman in a bikini covered in chocolate lying on top of the table.
Macchieri said, "My daughter said, 'Dad, this is really disgusting. This is not a country where women can achieve anything.'"
Feeling offended by this, Macchieri immediately protested to the resort. However, the resort responded only by saying it was "a chocolate statue, not a real woman."
Macchieri took a photo of the scene and posted it on social media. He expressed his disappointment, saying, "I was speechless when I saw this scene. What do the managers of Alpitour (the group the resort belongs to) think about representing a woman's body like this?"
He strongly criticized, "This resort promotes a family-friendly atmosphere but is using women's bodies to satisfy the eyes of others."
The incident was first reported by local media in the Sardinia region and on the 23rd was covered as major news by national local media. The media reported that criticism is surging on social media, accusing the resort of objectifying women's bodies.
As the controversy grew, the resort belatedly issued an apology.
The resort stated, "We express deep regret over this incident and clearly state that we had no intention to represent any values other than those we support. We will resolve this issue and take immediate measures to ensure that customers do not feel uncomfortable in any way."
