Nam Kyung-pil's Son Testifies in Drug Use Trial... Prosecution Seeks 5-Year Prison Sentence
Explanation of Former Governor Nam's 112 Emergency Call Circumstances
The prosecution requested the court on the 18th to sentence Nam Kyung-pil, the eldest son of former Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam, to five years in prison for repeatedly using methamphetamine just five days after being released due to the court's dismissal of an arrest warrant on charges of methamphetamine use.
Former Governor Nam appeared as a witness at his son's trial and explained the circumstances under which he reported his son, stating that if given the opportunity for his son to return to society through abstinence treatment, he would take full responsibility until the end.
On April 1st, Nam Mo, the eldest son of former Gyeonggi Province Governor Nam Kyung-pil, who was arrested on suspicion of methamphetamine use and released five days later after the detention warrant was dismissed, is seen leaving the Yongin Eastern Police Station in Gyeonggi Province to attend the warrant hearing.

The prosecution also requested a treatment detention order for Nam.
Nam's defense attorney stated in the final argument, "The defendant admits all the charges in this case and expresses remorse," and added, "Please actively consider mitigating circumstances so that the defendant's treatment can be completed and his reintegration into society is not delayed."
In his final statement, Nam said, "I will pay the price for my crimes and, when I return to society, I will prepare my body and mind and make efforts to at least fulfill the minimum responsibilities as a member of this society."
Former Governor Nam, who appeared as a witness for the defense at the trial, emphasized, "The defendant and his family judged that the defendant could not quit on his own, so they had him surrender and directly reported to the police to help him quit drugs with the assistance of public authority," and added, "The defendant clearly has the will to rehabilitate."
He continued, "As a father, I say that the defendant should receive punishment commensurate with his crimes, but I also hope that the time will not be too long," and added, "If the defendant undergoes abstinence treatment and can return to society, I will take full responsibility until the end."
Nam was indicted on charges of smoking marijuana around July last year and using methamphetamine 16 times from August of the same year to March 30 of this year at an apartment in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province. He is also accused of inhaling fentanyl, known as the so-called 'zombie drug,' in November last year.
