Coast Guard Agency and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology Join Forces to Strengthen Satellite Utilization at Sea
On the 17th, the Korea Coast Guard signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Satellite Research Center to expand the use of satellite information and mutually cooperate in establishing a Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) platform based on integrated maritime information.
This agreement was arranged to collaborate on all aspects of satellite development, operation, and utilization, including the use of images from the next-generation small satellite No. 2, the first practical satellite launched by the Nuri rocket in May, as well as joint research in the satellite field.
Through the agreement, the two organizations agreed to pool efforts in sharing and utilizing satellite observation images, conducting joint research in the satellite field, and jointly utilizing research infrastructure.
Oh Sang-kwon, Director of the Coast Guard's Security Bureau, said, "Through this memorandum of understanding with KAIST, Korea's first satellite development institution, we expect to contribute to strengthening national maritime power by tightening the maritime security network."
Han Jae-heung, Director of the Satellite Research Center, stated, "We sympathize with the necessity of the maritime information integration platform being established by the Coast Guard, and we will cooperate to ensure that the satellite, a core asset, is properly utilized at sea."
