On the 17th, the Office announced that, as part of Superintendent Lim Tae-hee's pledge to "guarantee tailored special education opportunities through the expansion of special schools," it will proceed with establishing a special school for the visually impaired called "Saebit School" (tentative name).
Saebit School will be built on the site of the relocated Yeongdong Middle School in Suwon. This location was chosen considering the need for visually impaired students to commute using public transportation such as subways and buses, as well as walking.
In particular, it is planned to operate as a new model of a special school that works together with local residents. The Office is currently consulting with Suwon City Hall to install community complex convenience facilities for local residents, including parking lots. Various shared sports facilities that can be used by students from Yeongtong, Suwon, and surrounding areas will also be constructed.
Han Geun-soo, Director of the School Establishment Planning Division at the Office of Education, stated, "The establishment of Saebit School will be a new beacon of hope not only for special education students with visual impairments but also for the approximately 50,000 visually impaired people in Gyeonggi Province. Through the installation of school complex facilities, we will establish a new model of a special school that works together with local residents."
