Gwangju Seo-gu to Conduct 'Street Tree Safety Inspection' Until the 30th
Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will conduct a street tree safety inspection until the 30th.
According to Seo-gu on the 16th, this street tree safety inspection was initiated to prevent human and property damage caused by street trees falling or breaking due to frequent abnormal weather phenomena such as heavy rain and strong winds caused by global warming.
Street trees greatly improve urban landscapes and living environments and are key elements of urban forests by absorbing carbon emissions, reducing fine dust, and enhancing biodiversity. However, street trees with reduced vitality can spoil the scenery or pose threats to public safety due to damage from natural disasters.
Accordingly, Seo-gu will investigate and analyze the growth ecology and environment of 90 street trees along 10 routes, including Sangil-ro and Pungam 1-ro, where hollowing phenomena occur, using tree medical experts such as arborists and tree treatment technicians, as well as ultrasonic measuring devices and drilling resistance meters, to assess safety grades.
Based on the safety inspection results, Seo-gu plans to improve growth by providing customized treatments for weakened trees, such as surgical procedures and nutrient administration, and will immediately remove trees that are severely decayed inside or have large holes and cannot recover, to prevent human and property damage caused by falling trees.
Yang Dong-sik, head of the Parks and Greenery Division, said, “We will accurately assess the condition of street trees to improve their growth and promptly remove high-risk trees. In particular, we will do our best to maintain and manage the trees to prevent damage such as trees falling or dying due to typhoons and strong winds.”
